![]() ![]() It can be difficult to persuade a customer to take action when it involves cost, particularly when they think a loss will never happen. We actively support charities across the country, support community initiatives and make a real positive difference. I think Ecclesiastical’s unique status as a charity-owned insurer is another huge positive. Leaving site, knowing you’ve got the customer’s “buy in” and trust, that they have accepted your advice and knowing that aspects you’ve identified will help to improve the risk. It’s also good to stand back and assess what issues are most important to the client and to us as the insurer and working together to find a solution that is mutually beneficial to all parties. There are various parts of the job I enjoy so it’s difficult to pinpoint one. I am lucky, I get the opportunity to go behind the scenes of some of the country’s most historic buildings and meet people from all walks of life.įrom a risk management point of view the most enjoyable part of the job is when you feel you’ve made a difference. Given the restrictions we’ve experienced through the Covid-19 pandemic, this has been invaluable in providing our customers with the high quality service they expect from Ecclesiastical. ![]() With evolving technology the role has changed and we are now able to carry out a lot of our surveys remotely which generates differing challenges and demands new communication skills. We have such a variety of clients, all with different risks to take into account – so there isn’t really a typical day. The majority of the time is spent visiting customers on site to discuss their risk management arrangements, providing guidance on ways to remove or mitigate risk and carrying out building valuations. I then follow up the site visit with a report raising agreed action points for the customer. What’s a typical day like as a Risk Management Surveyor? The opportunity to provide risk management guidance to some of the country’s oldest and most important buildings was extremely exciting, so I was delighted to get the chance. Since then my role has broadened beyond churches and I now survey risks ranging from private homes and independent schools, to, care homes, charities and theatres. I expressed an interest in joining the surveying team as early on as my interview for the underwriter role, and after five and a half years an opportunity arose within the newly formed survey academy and I knew it was for me. I initially joined Ecclesiastical as an insurance underwriter but knew of the company’s surveying heritage going back to the early 1900’s when applying for the position.
